  1. Is there a Nobel for arrogance? We're not supposed to have fire season on the barrier islands, but, day to day, everything here smells like burned wet dog thanks to the Okefenokee immolation. Maybe 40 mph wind will alleviate the annoyance. michaelj on Hand upon the plow. June 5th, pm; LA Mary. It's criminal to name any dog Smokey.

Salt water tanks have things that rust on occasion and I've used fishing weights in my tanks several times which rust a little bit and my shrimp and fish have not shown any ill effects. The part that sucks is if they degrade so much that it makes a huge mess. My weights have not done that though.

I haven't smelt it since middle school. I don't exactly want to get rid of it. I kinda like it, actually. I just want to know what it is.

Blood is mainly composed of hemeglobin, the oxygen delivering compound of the body. "Heme" is composed of four iron molecules. Thus blood is full of iron. This is why blood may have a "rusty" smell.

I have gravel in my tank. Sent from my SGH-IM using Fish Lore Aquarium Fish Forum mobile app. Rusted within two years so bad it was dropping chunks of rust into water.

Hello grapes, I am trying to turn a concrete/gravel/decking desert into a back garden. the gravel has had hundreds of litres of water run through it for at least five years and still smells like that. Based on my internet searchings so far, my suspicion is that this sand/gravel was created by crushing up old road.
  9. 'RUST'S A MUST' Mighty ships upon the ocean Suffer from severe corrosion, Even those that stay at dockside Are rapidly becoming oxide. Alas, that piling in the sea Is mostly Fe2O3. And where the ocean meets the shore, You'll find there's Fe3O4. 'Cause when the wind is salt and gusty, Things are getting awful rusty. We can measure, we can test it.
  10. The chemistry of taste is certainly quite interesting, but anything beyond those "flavors" is produced by smell (via far more complex physiological processes). You have certainly smelled rust (or, more accurately, various oxidation states of iron that exist in blood, likely from wet or weathered steel). So you are, in fact, correctly.
